IN HIS own bed, Colby tossed and turned. He didn’t get a lick of sleep, and when the rooster started crowing, he pulled his achy body out of bed and under a cool shower to wake up enough to go about his day.

He felt like a real heel for the way he’d treated Riley. Sweet, sexy, caring Riley, who seemed genuinely concerned about Colby’s problems. It was hard not to fall for the guy, but Colby wouldn’t open up and leave himself vulnerable. He didn’t go in for literature, but he thought it was Shakespeare—no, it was some other guy whose name escaped him—who said better to have loved and lost. But Colby didn’t see how that could be true. He better stay firmly in the “never loved at all” camp. Much safer there.

He dressed quickly and went downstairs to the kitchen before anyone else in the main house was up. He packed up some bread and cheese and grabbed some fruit from a jade-green glass bowl on the kitchen table. He made sure to take enough to last for breakfast and lunch so he wouldn’t need to come back until dinner.

If he could get through another twelve hours without seeing Riley, he might be able to wean himself away from the warmth and affection and that gorgeous smile. It wasn’t even the way Riley smelled or tasted or the things he could do with his mouth and hands or that enormous cock of his that had Colby hooked. It was Riley’s crooked smile and the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed and that pretty, pale blue ring around the bluest irises he’d ever seen.

Suddenly Colby’s appetite was gone, and the last thing he wanted was food. He felt a little sick as he trod the path from house to barn. He saw someone coming out of the dining hall wearing a white apron. From the distance it looked like Riley. Colby stopped dead in his tracks and waited until he realized it was Chuck, and then he continued along the path instead of skulking around the back.

He made it to the barn without seeing Riley and counted it as a win. His crew would arrive after breakfast, so he settled himself at his desk and drew up a list of work assignments as he nibbled on an apple.

Marcus and Tommo arrived twenty minutes later, along with two of the wranglers, who shouted greetings as they headed to the paddock to bring in the horses the guests would ride in the morning session.

“Missed you at breakfast,” Marcus said. “Brought you these.” He put a small wicker basket covered in a checked napkin on Colby’s desk. Daisy got up from the corner and wagged her tail as she sniffed in the direction of the basket.

“I got up early and came to work, then lost track of time.” He looked at the basket and then at Marcus.

“Homemade cro-saints.” Marcus grinned. He hadn’t said the word right but Colby wouldn’t correct him.

“Thanks, but no.
